In an increasingly digital world, I believe that there is an imperative need for analytics professionals who are familiar with the evolving landscape of digital media. I chose to enter the challenging field of Media Analytics at Elon University, where I discovered that I love discerning and sharing patterns in data.
My undergraduate professors recognized my inherent curiosity and encouraged me to pursue several research projects during my time at Elon — projects that gave me hands-on experience analyzing data. I used quantitative and qualitative tools and methodologies to scrutinize the rhetoric of an anti-vaccination media outlet and research the effects of marijuana legalization on mental health and crime. Stepping into the field of survey creation administration, I evaluated the results of two surveys regarding religious expression on social media and the privacy concerns of students. These projects challenged my problem-solving skills and gave me opportunities to practice text analysis, data visualization, and professional writing, as well.
My interest in communications, strategic thinking, and analytical skills converged during my tenure as the News Editor of Elon News Network. In this role, I coordinated and collaborated with a large team of reporters, photographers, editors, and producers to routinely publish articles and a weekly newspaper. This role taught me the value of teamwork, and I thrived as a leader working amongst a diverse group of people.
I am excited to be attending the Institute for Advanced Analyticsat North Carolina State University this year to continue expanding my toolbox of skills and explore the challenges of data science with like-minded peers.
A native North Carolinian, I am a longtime fan of the Carolina Hurricanes and enjoy exploring the state from the mountains to the coast with my beagle, Baker. When I have the chance to travel out of state, I enjoy snorkeling and scuba diving.
I have many hobbies and interests outside of analytics. I’m an avid fan of fantasy and science fiction novels, for example — my favorite authors at the moment are Neil Gaiman, Christopher Paolini, and Mira Grant. Currently — and I’ve been listening to many podcasts related to scary stories and folklore lately.
